Champion spellers are adept at more than just decoding language. However, you could be the best speller who ever lived and still lose. This type of linguistic deduction takes practice, and the best spellers can perform it instantly. Remembering the language of origin, I thought of Greek roots that mean sand. A psammophile is an organism that lives in sandy soils. The definition offered more clues to the right root in question. That eliminated about half of the roots, since most roots are either Greek or Latin. For example, in my winning word, “psammophile,” Bailly told me both parts are Greek. Asking about the language of origin helps narrow which roots to ask about next. Each question plays a role in guessing a word correctly. Jacques Bailly, the longtime pronouncer for the Scripps bee, answers investigative questions about a given word. In fact, this is exactly what the spelling bee wants spellers to learn - the mechanics of words. But, according to Dev, they do indeed guess, but their guesses are educated, their intuition is calculated. In stressful situations, sometimes you just have to breathe, steady yourself and leave things to chance.Īs you watch the cerebral spellers concentrate on the difficulty terms that are thrown at them, knitting their brows and concentrating mightily to recall the arcane expressions they face, you might think that the last thing they'd do is guess. Though I could - and did - study words for hours on end, I knew my greatest asset would be learning to guess correctly. Once I realized that, I changed the way I trained and started focusing on sharpening my intuition. Add in thousands of roots and hundreds of language patterns, and it is impossible to memorize everything. How did I finally break through? There are almost half a million words in English dictionaries. Of course, only one can be crowned the National Spelling Bee champion. After competing in rigorous local bees, about 200 spellers make it to the national stage, and a handful of them qualify for the grand finals. Each year, some 11 million students from across the country take part in the spelling bee circuit, all vying for the championship title. I will sort them out and invite the top 25-30 to the oral bee after school in February (parents/families invited). The annual Scripps National Spelling Bee is an incredible event. Your 3rd-5th grade child will take the written test and the vocabulary test at school sometime in January. All students will want to learn as many of these words as possible before the written test in January. Individual Grade Level Practice Lists are available in the library. Spelling Bee Practice lists available below: These lists don't include all of the possible words, but they are a good start for studying. I would suggest studying the Level 1 and 2 lists and move up to level 3 from there. Most of the work for the bee will need to be done by students on their own time.
